Hike, Dine, & Glow:
Grand Rapids Experience
From Detroit to the lakeshore and into the city, this experience is all about stepping away from your usual routine and tapping into a full day of movement, connection, and unforgettable moments.

We’ll be traveling from the Detroit area out to the west side of Michigan for a refreshing change of scenery, trading city views for Lake Michigan shoreline, then bringing the energy back into Grand Rapids for food, nightlife, and a one-of-a-kind evening experience.

The Trail Experience
We’ll kick things off with a late afternoon hike designed to give everyone time to arrive comfortably (and check into accommodations for those staying overnight) before hitting the trail.
-
Distance: Just under 4 miles (with the opportunity to extend the trail over 5 miles)
-
Difficulty: Easy to moderately easy
-
Terrain: A mix of sandy paths, packed trails, and light rolling hills
-
Elevation: Minimal to moderate dune inclines, nothing too intense (Under 200 feet)
-
Environment: Open shoreline views, dune landscapes, and scenic stretches along Lake Michigan
-
Pace: Relaxed, group-paced with time for photos and short breaks

This trail is perfect for those who want a scenic and fulfilling hike without the pressure of a long-distance or high-intensity trek. You’ll get the views, the movement, and the experience, all while keeping it enjoyable and accessible.
Dining in the City
After the hike, we’ll head into Grand Rapids to tap into the city’s food scene.
-
Group dinner at one of Grand Rapids’ top restaurants
-
Time to unwind, connect, and refuel after the trail
-
A key part of the Hike & Dine experience... good food, good people, great energy

For those staying overnight, we’ll also step out the next morning for a brunch experience before heading back to the Detroit area, keeping the vibe going just a little longer.

Lantern Fest Experience
As the sun sets, we’ll make our way to John Ball Zoo to experience the lantern fest in its full glow.
-
Immersive light displays and large-scale illuminated installations
-
A nighttime atmosphere that completely transforms the space
-
A unique way to wind down the evening after a full day of activity

This is why we pace the day the way we do, so you can fully enjoy the lantern fest without feeling rushed.

Overnight Option vs. Day Trip
This experience is flexible depending on how you want to move:
Day Trip Option
-
Travel from Detroit → hike → dine → lantern fest → return home
-
About a 2.5-hour drive each way
-
Perfect if you don’t mind driving back at night

Overnight Option
-
Stay the night in Grand Rapids
-
No need to rush after the lantern fest
-
Enjoy a more relaxed pace + brunch the next morning before heading home

Travel + Flow of the Day

Most of the group will depart from the Detroit area
-
Late afternoon hike start for smooth arrival
-
Transition into the city for dinner
-
Evening lantern fest experience
-
Return home same night or turn in for the night and continue the experience the next day
