Sleeping Bear Dunes: The Great Dunescape
Traverse City Area
May 9–10, 2026 (Mother’s Day Weekend)
If you’ve ever said you were ready to see what your endurance really looks like outside of Metro Detroit trails like Grand Ledge… this is that hike.
We’re taking a quick overnight trip up to the Traverse City area to experience one of the most intense and rewarding hiking terrains in Michigan... the dunes of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.
This HARD-rated hike will challenge you with:
-
HARD-rated hike across loose sand terrain
-
Steep sandy inclines that require full leg strength
-
Minimal shade coverage (sun exposure throughout)
-
Continuous elevation gain as you climb the dunes
-
Uneven footing. Expect to sink and slide with almost each step
-
Wind exposure at higher elevations
-
Panoramic Lake Michigan overlooks at the top
-
Physically demanding on calves, glutes, and core
-
Slower pace than wooded trails due to terrain
-
Recommended for hikers with moderate to high stamina (great for those training for other advanced Hike & Dine trips)
This is truly for hikers who are ready to put their stamina to the test.. especially those preparing for bigger trails with Hike & Dine this year like Pictured Rocks, or our out-of-state trips later in the season.
We’ll arrive bright and early Saturday (May 9th) to maximize our day on the dunes and take our time navigating the terrain, soaking in those unreal Lake Michigan overlooks that honestly feel more like the west coast than the Midwest.
After conquering the dunes, we’ll head into Traverse City for a well-earned dining experience, tapping into some of the city’s best local bites before turning in for the night at one of their top rated hotels for location and cleanliness.
...And to our moms who still want a challenge that weekend... don’t worry. We’ll be departing early Sunday morning so you can make it back home in time to continue celebrating Mother’s Day in the afternoon and evening.
(Unless hiking is your chosen choice of celebrating your day)
This is one of those hikes where:
You’ll be sandy.
You’ll probably question your life choices mid-climb.
But you’ll be glad you did it.
Spots are open and this trip will be paid in full at booking once you register.
Booking + Registration Link is now live. Are you ready for the climb?
